Madonna replaces Evan Molloy, who was 43rd in the nation for saves per game (9.63).

Dom Madonna is who Syracuse men’s lacrosse head coach John Desko expects to fill the vacant starting goalie position left by Evan Molloy graduating, Desko announced Wednesday at the team’s media day.

Desko cited “experience” as the reason to why he wants Madonna to be the one to fill the role.

“(Madonna’s) a fifth-year guy and he’s been with the team three years now,” Desko said. “He had really a good fall, he did well. He played back up last year and he did a nice job out there.”

Madonna has appeared in three games for the Orange as the backup to Molloy since transferring to Syracuse from Merrimack, where he was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference rookie team in his freshman year.

Madonna is tasked with filling the role of an all-league talent in Molloy, who’s 9.63 saves per game put him at 43rd in the nation. Molloy also sat at 49th in save percentage with a .495.

The Orange are waiting to see what Madonna can do in a game situation, but Desko says that he feels he is “ready.” The Orange opens its season on Feb. 10.
